It’s no secret that I’m a dog lover. I have two of the most cuddly, adorable, cleverest, always-into-something, precious doggies at home. And just like my family, I want to keep them safe and sound, because, well, they are family!
Now that summer is quickly approaching, bringing with it scorching hot days and equally sweltering nights, here are some things you may want to keep in mind:
Did you know dogs can’t sweat? This is why they pant. Panting keeps them cool.
Know the signs of an overheated dog: excessive drooling, a dog that becomes lethargic, bloodshot eyes, skin that doesn’t readily fall back in place when lifted.
Did you know dogs cool from the bottom up?
Trying to cool that doggie down? Wet the paws and stomach.
Did you know dogs absorb and release heat through their feet?
Consider using doggie boots on hot days, especially if you’re walking your best bud on hot surfaces such as cement and asphalt. This will help to keep them nice and comfy.
Did you know not all dogs hydrate the same?
Dogs with darker coats absorb more heat and will probably require more hydration than their lighter coat brethren. Overweight dogs are at an increased risk of dehydration, so keep them watered like the beautiful flowers they are. Be sure to carry plenty water on walks and trips to the park.
Did you know there are fun ways to keep your dog cool?
- Place a kiddie pool in a shaded area and let the fun begin.
- Spread a wet towel in the yard for your dog to chillax on.
- Set up sprinklers. Humans and doggies will love this one.
One very important tip that should go without saying:
NEVER, EVER, NEVER, EVER, EVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A HOT VEHICLE!
Even in shaded areas, the vehicle can get extremely hot, drastically increasing the chances of dehydration. Couple that with your pooch getting overexcited by things going on outside of the vehicle and/or anxiety from being left alone, and you have a recipe for disaster!
I hope you found these tips helpful! And I hope your furry friends stay happy and healthy!
You visited the New Hanover County Main branch library to speak about your books on a local author meeting. I finally got a chance to read one of your books, ” Cupid’s Error”. .I loved it.
Thank you so much, Tawana! I’m so glad you enjoyed Cupid’s Error. I hope you try my other books, too. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.
